Graduation Ceremony

A bright sunny day, and everyone expectation was the same ‘a bright shinny graduation’. From the welcoming of the ushers, graduates beautiful plaited hair to their gown and interior decoration in the hall, clearly shown that it was going to be different graduation ceremony. Family and friends came prepared for the occasion, even with their younger children as sign of how this occasion is important to them. Also in attendance was Mrs. Catherine Ngahu chairperson ICT board of Kenya, Mrs. Laura Bruce Program Executive Director from (IYF) International Youth Foundation, Samsung Local Representative Jakyung Kang from Samsung middle East, Gloria Anampiu Marketing manager Samsung, Ravinder Paul Singh and Jackie, Nairobits Board of directors all present to witness the all time graduation. Time stated for the graduation to start and to end was according to bulletin, which showed how Nairobits graduation is taking a new turn. The ceremony started with Mark kamau as master of ceremony speech, and Anne Ikiara, Nairobits General manager welcoming speech. Then Mark took the floor for Media lab citation and awarding of their certificate by the guest on their six months intensive web design training dubbed Samsung Real Dreams.

From media lab class two students a male and female were chosen to be the best, Andrew Mtua and Mary Njeri awarded with a 3G model type C3010 mobile phone from Samsung.

Course three works was also on the spotlight when they did a group work consisting of six members, they informed as all of various the community in Africa on their practices and ceremonies, Some of the communities are

3) Zulu
4) Wodaabe
5) Initiation

After all this new knowledge we got from this students they too were awarded with a certificate for three months training on website creating.

The ceremony could have not ended before the guest say a word to the graduates and congratulate them for their outstanding work, and in their speeches they said that it looks promising for youths in Kenya when we advance in ICT, and thanked Nairobits for their role they are playing in ensuring that the dream lives on.

Graduation Ceremony

Course three students had a great chance of exploiting the diverse cultures of different communities of Africa when they visited the Kenya national archives. Just to have both the theoretical and visual impression of ways of life of people. The lessons they learn t were on:

3) Imagination.

And got to understand the chronological order of events and founders of our country Who lead us to independence? In addition they appreciated their differences in their customs as strength in uniting one nation made of people with unique and diverse background

Trainer Transfer

One of Nairobits trainers Mr. Wilson Masaka will be joining another training institution based in Zanzibar namely Zanzibits. The institution emerged from Nairobits and hence they share the same model one being working with youths from disadvantaged backgrounds by empowering them with creative ICT skills; Wilson will be taking the responsibilities of training, project management, and co-ordination in Zanzibits. We the bloggers had an opportunity to have a one on one interview with him and he had this to say;
“As a trainer I have learnt so many morals from my students from the different environments and background they come from, their way of life and uniqueness which is good for inter-cultural exchange, and am positive that I will take along with me all the experience have had both technical, creative and life skills. The inspirations I have from people around me especially the youth makes it even fun to work and feel motivated to achieve more, I must admit it brings good understanding and respect between us. I’m looking forward to see young people excel well professionally and overcome challenges, one of the great things I’m looking forward to is to learn good Swahili language and when I return I will be able to share my experiences around. One advice I would love to leave with everyone is that imitations is limitation of your creativity”.

Neighborhood Project

From making a personal poster to now a website based in there Neighborhood, course three students are up again to show their creativity and hard work on their class projects.
The project revolves around activities in their area of living which they highlight positive and negative lifestyle and how they can improve the living standard of the people.
We have categorized their projects in different topics from Sports, Agriculture, Business, Slum life, to Women transition. From this class assignment Students came with ideas and research work for awareness of the activities, and some students have found the drive to start their small business in their community.

Athi River prisons training

From producing excellent students and empowering youths from the slum areas, Nairobits were on another task of training prison wardens in Athi River prisons at kitengela.
Two of Nairobits trainers Monicah Achieng and Faith Nyaboki have been posted to help with the training of prison wardens for a period of three months and the areas on training are on:

Stanzi ended her lessons

After a whole month of training, Stanzi bid her student’s goodbye and likewise her students are grateful on her lessons on Photography.
Stanzi lessons were more on photography and came when the students are preparing for their Neighborhood and cultural projects.
From the good work she has done some of the students had this to say:
“Taking pictures is a bit common to everyone but taking good pictures is so rare for many people who haven’t learned the quality of good photos. And this is what differentiates us from how we were taking photos then, and now. The lessons also opened our eyes that one can venture into becoming photographers or combine it with web designing, as picture is what captures the eye.”

“From her visit in Kenya (nairobits) we got to exchange our cultural practice, and learnt the way of life in New York and the comparison and contraction to Kenyan lifestyle.
We borrowed some ideas like time keeping, being fast & independent and an open mind, and we are looking forward to exploit our creativity. “

The medialabers are preparing themselves for the Job market equipped with areas of skills from web development, soft skills, presentation and work ethics among others. Nairobits student announced winner !!!

Nairobits student has been announced winner at the just concluded World summit youth Awards 2009 !!!
Andrew Mutua a student in the medialab who submitted one of his project done in course 3 about " Sewer Tourism" was announced the winner on the Go green category. Read more about his project at http://www.nairobits.com/students/

The WSYA winners will take centre stage in Monterrey, Mexico during the United Nations Global Forum on ICT and Development and WSA Winners Celebrations in June 10-13, 2009. They will showcase their projects to government and business leaders, representatives of civil society and the international community.

Andrew Mutua is so excited and ecstatic about the news. He was sharing with us that this is one of his dreams come true. "Now I believe that anything is possible when you give it your all."
He insisted that the passion he has for the environment he has grown up in, was what inspired him to submit the project. He particularly has high expectations about his upcoming trip and sees it as an opportunity that will open many avenues for him.

He is so thankful to Nairobits and he says that he owes his success to the organization for empowering him with ICT skills and making him know himself better. Congratulations!!!

Computers are the engines that can be used to produce amazing results if used well by the users. We had an interview with Zak Jakoyo and Dacon Omondi who see to it that the machines at Nairobits work effectively.

Due to his effective services, Nairobits has helped him get more clients which include The Godown Arts center, Sarakasi Trust, Media Focus among many other Companies he has worked for. His growth has enabled him to create more opportunities for the youth and currently he has five employees.

Amazingly, he has great ideas of creating opportunity for Nairobits students, through starting an E-marketing department in the company which will offer solutions to his network of clients. He gave us a glimpse of some basic computer maintenance tips that an individual has to know to avoid common user initiated problems:

Colour Harmony

Harmony can be defined as a pleasing arrangement of parts, whether it be music, objects, color, or even elements. The beauty of the world lies on how one sees things, and you can only see things through a reflection of their colors.

We have three sets of colors. Primary, secondary and tertiary colors which when mixed correctly, compliment each other thus creating an inner sense of order and balance in any visual experience.

Today, the Course two’s were learning on color theory and they worked with the color wheel after which they will learn how colour can be associated with one's personality. They were taught how they can mix different colors in their sites to create visual interest of their viewers. They practically made their own color wheels and at the end of the day, they appreciated the power of colors.

Amazingly, the starting point for understanding the relativity of color is by observing the effects colors have on each other.

Just to illustrate this, let’s carry out a small test. Do you think the red squares below are of the same size? And do they harmonize with their backgrounds?

Medialab on the move

Since the commencement of the Medialab classes, a lot of new concepts have been learnt. Talk about ActionScripting in Flash, Concept and Visual Design in Photoshop, General web Development Skills and dealing with Clients. Ultimately, their skills have been sharpened and there has been major improvements in the quality of students work, especially with their clients and class projects.
With only two months remaining before they graduate, it is clear that they are already set for the Job Market!

Wynton House of Music targets all the people who are interested to learn music and also serves as a charity school.

This is an inspiration from one youth group around Mathare called Inspiration center. The center deals with children who are engaged in activites like drama , photography, counselling and art work.Its main aim is to empower the youths of the residence.

At the moment, the students are learning how to make database driven websites using Joomla. The first phase is introduction to PHP, introduction to MySql and the general Web development using CMS.

Volunteeer Trainer

My name is Stanzi McGlynn. I’m from Lake Placid, New York in America. I’m currently a junior at St. Lawrence University (3rd year) in Canton, New York. At St. Lawrence, I study Economics, Fine Arts, and African Studies. I’ve been in Kenya for about three months studying with my University’s abroad program here, which is over thirty years old and continues to be one of my school’s most popular and competitive programs.

During my stay in Kenya, I have been taking classes in Swahili, History, Health, and a general cultural study of East Africa and I have traveled to Kericho, Mombasa, and Amboseli as well as Tanzania. It’s been a great experience so far and I’ve really enjoyed myself and everything about Kenya!

Each student on our program must complete an Independent Study (IDS) at the end of the semester for the last month of our stay in Kenya. So for my IDS, I will be interning here at NairoBits teaching students about art theory and photography.

During my time here, I hope to leave an impression upon the students with what I will teach them about my background in art. Additionally, I hope to go through a process of cultural exchange with everyone at NairoBits, so that the experience can be one of mutual learning. Thus far, everyone at NairoBits, from the students to the trainers to the administrators, has made me feel extremely welcome and I look forward to an exciting month.

Nairobits Alumni Showing The Way

It has always been said that you should think outside the box. But as we discovered today, in the ICT field, it pays to think without "The box". This way your thinking, attitude and perception of concepts is not going to be limited.

No one would tell it better than two of our Alumni, Khadija Sebit and Idi Juma. Khadija Sebit graduated from Nairobits in 2006 and has since worked with two companies. Currently she is employed at KenyaWeb. Idi Juma on the other hand, graduated in 2004 and has since worked with 3Mice interactive Media where he is currently the Project manager .They were in Nairobits to give a talk to the current students on their experiences and some skills that they ought to know before they venture to the outside world.

One of the most important skill from their talk was that of setting your goals, having a purpose for whatever you do and planning for your time and future. They insisted that once you realize what your goals are, you will be in a better position to plan effectively to achieve much in life. And it all begins with one's attitude, knowing your strong points and perfecting on them while improving your weaknesses.

As much as one is going to face many challenges and changes in the near future, it is wise not to forget your where you came from. They encouraged the students to once in a while visit thier Community based Centers and also try their level best to give their families hope in change of thier living standards.

"In most occasions it calls for one to make sacrifices to be able to achieve much", Khadija said. They encouraged on team work saying that having a network of friends facilitates the sharing of ideas, growth of individuals which eventually makes work easier.

Course Two Updates

We have had our Course Two Students for the past three weeks and so far, it clearly shows that they are enjoying their stay. While in course two, they learn more on internet usage combined with online presentation. Inside the Web consists of 12 lessons in which students learn the basics of internet, do an exchange and create their own site.

Their expectations are that they become good web designers and developers having in mind the Basic Principles and Elements in the respective fields. After the whole course which takes 3 months, they are expected to have their own Neighborhood website and also a group cultural website. We interviewed a few of them and this is what they had to say:

Pascal Odhiambo
He comes from SID. "Am very happy that i have made it to course two, and I owe all the success to my perseverance I had to go through to learn ICT. The road to success is narrow and only the determined ones achieve their goals.My aim is to fuse my creativity in website creation and ultimately be able to make it to Media lab and get employed.
I know the road map won’t be easy but believing in myself is what I believe which will help me to reach my target."

Emily Wanjiru
From Mathare environmental, said "It so satisfying to know that after hard work success follows.
I must admit that proper planning was the right recipe for me to be here in course two, and my focus now, is to be one of the best students in web creation by acquiring the skills. I believe that everyone is eying to be in media lab and am in for it, because this will be tighter than course one; and it will be even greater to make it up there.
Impossible things only happen in our minds as it all starts with our thinking."

Genesis Party

Alumni Experiences

After a fun and funny chat, we settle down with three NairoBits ex-students together with the blog team for a brief interview about their challenges in the job market and achievements so far.
Martin Kariuki, Duncan Onyango and Fredrick Juma are all enthusiastic about the interview and are already having fun making jokes about each other's experiences. I introduce myself and jokingly they respond as if it were an AA meeting, “Hi Tosh” and afterwards continue joking with the rest of the blog team.

Martin now a freelancer finished the program in 2007 and has worked for 3 companies so far. He answers “Job satisfaction and financial stability” when asked why he has changed jobs that often in a short period. “I like working independently and ever I need my creative space... thats why I have settled on-to freelancing” he continues.
He spends a lot of time at Nairobits and when asked why he spends most of time with students he says he cant help it... “I just find myself ever ready to help and assist wherever I can. I had an easier and exciting time on my first job as my supervisor was an alumni and now one of my closest friends”.

Looking at Duncan and joking, we all burst into laughter about his thankful but funny comments towards Duncan for being there for him. His challenges during internship when asked weren't that much since he had a “cool” supervisor. “Since I left Nairobits I have seen a big improvement in the quality of work from students and I give a big thumbs up to the trainers for a job well done... I have grown tremendously with my skills and I thank them for the training and coaching afterwards”.

Turning the attention to Duncan, he shyly introduces himself with all his five names and we all laugh at his funny nicknames. He finished the program in 2006 and has also worked for 3 companies. “My experience with NairoBits students has been overwhelmingly creative!” He answers with a smile when asked how it feels to mentor interns from NairoBits. “They and we, are all hardworking compared to University graduates who come to work with these multimedia companies. It is such an inspiration working with them”.

When asked what he would be doing if he never joined Nairobits, Martin jokingly says, “hassling” and we all we all burst into laughter before Duncan responds.... “To be honest, I would still be struggling with whatever I was doing before” he says... for now, I foresee growth in myself that is beyond measure and I have absolutely no regret for joining NairoBits”. His word to the current class, “Try and explore new media thats upcoming in the market”.

Fred sits up and smiles as he introduces himself... “I was in the same class as Duncan and share most of my challenges and achievements having also worked for the companies as him. The only difference is that, my lifestyle changed and responsibilities are now more than I had before” he says.
“I haven't been able to comeback and assist in training new stuff I have learned, but I hope to do so as soon as I get time”. When asked how he feels about his current job stability he says “I cant feel better than what I feel at the moment and many thanks and congratulations go to NairoBits... its been a long time coming”.
We all smile as we conclude and joke about the recent resignations from our cabinet ministers...

Youth And ICT

I think the greatest measure of success is imparting skills to others, adding value into someone's life via training. Such new skills can be the hallmark of someones life and when you have done that for someone you feel truly awesome.

Mark Twain said it best "There is nothing training cannot do. Nothing is above its reach. It can turn bad morals to good; it can destroy bad principles and recreate good ones; it can lift men to angel ship.

At the Go down center its all about imparting skills to young people and also the young at heart. skills in visual and performing arts, TV and radio productions and Information Technology.

Nairobits imparts skills in IT. Just across we have Medeva imparting skills in TV and radio productions. These two agencies came together the other day to foresee the production of a talk show.

Medeva trainees had nairobits trainees on a roll in a fascinating mock production having an anchor for the show, panelists and an audience.

They engaged in a heated debate over the education system in kenya which also touched on the chaos that had recently struck Kenyatta University in the last week.

Just watching and listening, I felt that the youth in Kenya also need a platform to air their views. They really have heavy points to make.

Media lab Now

Three months to go for media lab graduation, a lot has been happening from lessons to do with communication, professionalism etc.

In February the media lab were taken through design elements and principles and how to communicate visually and come up with an outstanding design.

In March it was time to make things move hence using flash action Script to come up with interactive work.

This April they are going to cover all the web development aspect of the web focusing more on Html, CSS, Dreamweaver and a bit of design etc. Someone once said 'design follows functionality' or is it functionality follow design, whichever but both goes hand in hand. I'm looking forward to a more interactive class with my sole objective for the students to understand rather than cram concepts.

Interview with Tito

To wrap up our first week of April, We had the privileged to interview one of Nairobits Alumni students.

Titus Kuria aka.Tito graduated from Nairobits in 2005. He has worked for some years and currently he is a freelance web designer. He was particularly sharing with us the experiences he has while in the Job Market and also the way forward for the students who are currently undergoing their training.

"What most people get wrong is that your background affects what you can make or deliver to the outside world. What matters is the Quality of the skills and expertise you are delivering," He insisted.

He also had some advice on interviews and the work place. He says that the extra effort that one dedicates to his work or project is what makes the difference. That for one to be successful in the IT industry, he/she must be disciplined and be in a position to work with deadlines.

For those aspiring to be interns , he adds that it does not matter on which company you are working for - but the skills that one learns from the internship to boost their portfolio is what matters ! ".

When Questioned on his definition of Success, he eagerly answers that it all starts with an individual.

" Always remember that what you are doing now, will determine your future and fate. Quality should be your guiding principle in all that you do in life !! "

YIKE Graduations and Students Meeting

On Friday 3rd April 2009, we attended the graduation ceremony for the students from the information centers. They were 60 in total, all from the different Information Centers that Nairobits Partners with.

In attendance for the event were Community Based Organizations and their representatives.They included YIKE( Youths Initiative Kenya) , MUYOG( Marurui Youth Group) , FHOK (Family Health Option Kenya) , KCYP (Kibera Community Youth Programe) and Onestop Youth Center , all of whom had some of their students graduating from the One month Course work on the theme of "My music shop".

They had great presentations and it was clear that they had learnt a great deal in their classes from the professionalism displayed in their work. Everyone was fully prepared and their excited faces and enthusiasm told the story of contentment and success. The graduation also enabled students to bond and know what was happening in the different Organizations.
The day was all wrapped up with refreshments and Nairobits Family congratulates all that graduated.

The meeting of all the 60 course one Students went well on Saturday 4th April. The main agenda of the day was to to motivate, advice and above all convey to the students their verdict on whether they are in or not, and if so, the steps forward for the same.
Discussions were held on the way forward by the students and later, the trainers summed up the event by giving their take on the same issue.And yes, they were ready for the verdict.
The day could not end in a much better way than with refreshments before the students left for their homes. The course two classes start on 7th April 2009 at 9am .

This week, Nairobits has a number of events that are going to be taking place. Tomorrow, 31st March 2009, the Course One Group Two will be graduating from their Entrepreneurship classes that has been running from 20th February 2009. The event will take place at Nairobits from 10.00 am . All are welcomed to view their presentations on what it takes to run a successful business.

One of the information Centers, YIKE (Youth Initiative Kenya) will be hosting the graduation Ceremony for their students who will have presentations on "My music shop".

There will be a meeting of all course ones (Group 1 and Group 2) on Saturday 4th April 2009 from 9.00 am. The main agenda of the day will be to motivate, advice and above all convey to the students their verdict on whether they are in or not, and if so, the steps forward for the same.

Graduation for Course One Group Two 2009

Its interesting how time passes by really fast. We had our second group of course ones' reporting on 20th February 2009 and barely five weeks after, they are graduating from their first course in Nairobits.

Friday 27th March was a day filled with pomp, color and excitement as it was the graduating day for the Course One Group Two. It was clear from their faces that they were excited and confident of the achievements they had made since their inception to Nairobits.
The turn out was overwhelming as parents, friends and former students arrived in time for the graduation of their loved ones and friends.The presentations begun after the M.C had welcomed all to the occasion.
The theme of the day was " My Music shop" , where the graduates had to create an imaginary music shop and market it through their posters, C.D covers and business cards.
It was evident that they had done a great job which was justified by their work which involved music genres that ranged from reggae, bongo, hip hop, gospel, ragga, crunk, rumba, jazz to blues.

The Managing Director, Anne Ikiara, was also present and she concluded the ceremony with words of advice and encouragement for the graduates and those in attendance.

After the Graduation ceremony, friends and family were treated to refreshments, after which the graduates were taken out for lunch at "The Bazaar."

The day was summed up perfectly with a picnic at the "Mamba Village". Here, team work skills were tested through team building activities and everyone enjoyed themselves with Games, songs, The gift session, dancing and Mchongoano (Teasers). Below are some of the captured moments:

Five weeks have gone by, bringing the course one group two classes to an end, hence to bestow and certify the graduands for the hard work put in place actually comes out as the best way to go around the process.
Therefore, we the Nairobits fraternity are honoured to invite you to the graduation ceremony, that will be taking place at the Godown hall, along Dunga road south B on Friday 28th march 2009 from 10am.

An inspiration session in Nairobits.

When visitors come knocking, you welcome them and listen to what they have.
That’s what happened when Nairobits received two visitors namely; Tony and Beatrice from wazimba foundation.
Their visit was educating and motivating. Tony such an inspiring character took us through an interactive session of career choosing and success. He said “your success is not based on your background, decide on what you are good at, and work on it to succeed”.
Basically, it was an encouraging session with students asking question which he answered with real life stories.
At the end day everybody was motivated, inspired and full of life expectation. Thanks to Tony and Beatrice

This is the column where you will find all the experiences, challenges and lessons learnt from the students while they are in Nairobits design school.

Charles Kigotho

A second born in a family of three children, and brought up by a single mother. Am 19 years old, living in Kahawa west? Currently am a student at Nairobits school of design, course one.

Before I joined the institution I had cleared high school (2008) and was perfecting my skills in paintings, graphics, drawing and designing clothes (t-shirts, jeans..) I also worked as peer educator for F.H.O.K (Family Health Options Kenya) which is my mother organization.

Mercy Adhiambo

She is nineteen years old and a fourth born in a family of six children. "Life has never been the same after my dad died four years ago, but through God’s grace we have managed it. I did my exams last year and performed well and my hope is that I will join University come next year.

Am very happy that my hard work, paved way for an opportunity to acquire ICT skills in Nairobits School of design. As it has always been my dream, to be a web designer,am positive that I will work even harder to achieve my goal.
I am glad to have entrepreneurial skills, plus I can design posters, business cards and Compact Disk (CD) covers.
I have a long way to go whilst still here in Nairobits, so join me in this journey of digital world. "

The awaited tournament!!

Saturday was the D day for the long awaited tournament which Nairobits was fully represented. Both the volleyball and the football team were prepared physically and psychologically as they entered the football pitch.

We had two football teams which showed there superiority when they won their first matches, but only one team proceeded to the quarter final after the end of first round pool matches. The going was that tough for both teams that they had to go to extra time but still there was no goal to differentiate the two teams and penalty shoot out was the last option where we were defeated 4-5 after a goal less draw.

The volleyball team also did us proud after trashing all the teams they were with in their pool and advancing to the semifinals, where they tried there best to beat the defending champions, but lost by slight margin of 3 points.

Both the trainers and the students were happy. Drawing to the conclusion that it was more of a fun and networking day rather than a competition.

It was a day to reckon with!

Sports tournament!!

The football and volleyball tournament organised by Christian Sports Contact(CHRISC) one of the partner organisation will all be going down on 14th march at Githogoro grounds(kiambu). Nairobits is honored to be in the list of the competitors.

Louisa,a marketer and advertiser by proffession from the Butterfly works was in Nairobits for one week.Andrew one of the bloggers had an up-close and candid conversation with her and this is what she had to say,
“I feel like am at home with the conducive and friendly environment, It also feels good meeting the Kenyan people and the hospitality they brace towards me. Before coming to Kenya I saw what happened and the traumatic scenes but surprisingly it has resumed to normal.I really had an interactive session with you students because you were so attentive and were eager to know more about advertising. Thumbs up. But having not so much experience in teaching, I was nervous, but as you asked questions frequently I gained composure as the session went along.In general I’m grateful for the great initiative the three founders of butterfly works have done. Am looking forward for another session with you guys."

The media lab students were lucky to have Louisa as their guest tutor on marketing strategies under (procedure for advertisement).It was interesting for the students to learn advertisement strategy so as to fuse with design skills they have, and for sure it was worthwhile for Louisa to take her own time to help us understand advertisement in a broader perspective. As the class representative (Laura) puts it “We were privileged to have her around, for we have learnt a lot and wished if only she would stay longer.”

Saturday 7th march 2009 saw the parents meeting for the second group of course one. Parents on the other hand did not fail their children as they came in for the meeting punctual and eager to learn more about Nairobits.
After a brief introduction on Nairobits, they were taken through an open forum where they talked about their contribution towards their childrens' success and later given a chance to ask questions, and be answered in the Question and answer session.After the meeting, all parents had a chance to view what their children have been doing in Nairobits while having refreshments and Yes, they were impressed.

We also got a chance to interview some of the parents who had this to say:
Jane Wamaitha a mother of three, was delighted that her son is being empowered with ICT skills which she knows will help him in the near future. Prior to her son joining Nairobits, she had plans on him to advance music wise because she saw the passion of music in him.

“For sure Nairobits has an impact on us, the young generation” as Alan Meyo puts it, A brother to Samuel Okumu “We were waiting for the KCSE results to be released so as to plan for our brother’s future but we are quite impressed with Nairobits for giving him a chance to learn ICT skills in this competitive world which is a great thing for him and the entire lot of students.

We appreciate the parents dedicating their time to come and be part of their childrens progress.

Parents Meeting

Nairobits will be hosting a parents meeting on the Saturday, 7th March 2009 at the Go Down Arts Center.

The meeting is going to be an open forum where parents are going to know more about Nairobits, while being briefed on the Organizations' training curriculum. It will also be a great opportunity for parents to have a glimpse of what their children interact with while at Nairobits.

In addition to this, how the parents are going to lias with the Organisation in supporting their loved ones is going to be discussed in depth.

The meeting starts at 10.00 am in the morning. All are welcomed and Please keep time .

Monday, course one students took there first lessons in Nairobits, starting with the Entrepreneurship skills class which is aimed at empowering the youths with business skills. The class will be taught on Mondays while ICT will run for the rest of the week for the next five weeks.

Some of the students shared with us there first experience on their first day at Nairobits…
Joyce wanjiru from (one stop youth group) had this to say “I enjoyed the lessons due to the good participation and friendliness of my fellow students”
Robert Njogu (mathare environmental) liked the lessons on business management, he said “I was challenged to find that some students new more than I do and this really is a motivation.”

Friday, 19th February 2009 marked the day when Course one group two were introduced to their new home for the next five weeks.

Being their orientation day, they were introduced to the staff and the students; after which they were taken through their Course work and some of the guidelines that they had to adhere to. The day was ultimately crowned when they were taken for a tour through the premises, Go Down, which they will be interacting with for the same period of time.

For the next five weeks they will be undertaking the "Behind The Screen" course which enables them have knowledge on the basics of the computer. This will be coupled with entrepreneurship classes and Life skills that are conducted within the same course work. Their classes are beginning today and It is evident from their excitement and testimonials that they have high expectations, and hope to learn a lot while in Nairobits.

Entrepreneurship class graduation!

Nowadays it’s not guaranteed that majority of our youth will get employment after studies. Its here that Nairobits comes out differently, they offer Entrepreneur skills to all course one students. These skills helps the students to start business on their own thus creating some source of income and hence promoting self-reliance. After 5weeks of hard work and determination, it was time for the course ones to showcase their work. They started off by presenting their attractive business proposals and even gave free samples for their goods and services to market their businesses.

Indeed the skills taught were well translated into their work.

One of the students had this to say: “After 5weeks of hard work I believe that with the skill I have gained, I am able to start my own business and know how to invest.I am grateful for this opportunity I have learned a lot. Thanks Nairobits ” he finished off.

From us, all the best and make good use of the skills taught in I.C.T and entrepreneurship and transform your life for the better.

Looking forward to the next group; course one group 2 who are expected in Nairobits on Friday (20/02/09).

The D-day 'Course 1 graduation'

Early in the morning guests, friends and parents are streaming in ready for the D-day. It is all Pomp and colour. The first graduation of the year; everyone is in high spirits and anticipation.

The function starts without any further ado, giving a platform to the thirty determined students to present some of the articles they have been able to come up with, which include a music poster, front and back Compact Disk(CD) cover.
I must say that each presentation was a force to reckon with, as each brought forth some creative way of stage making the day even better.

Music articles ranging from Gospel, R&B, reggae and salsa are just but part of the diverse range of articles that the ‘behind the screen’ students had to showcase.

In attendance was the General manager Ann who presented certificates to the graduates along with one of the Board members Mr Paul Ravinder who graced the occasion and who left us with some insight as well.

The day would not have been any better without some entertainment from our very own talented students and an invited artiste to brighten up the occasion.Indeed it was a pleasant occasion and everyone got to be treated with some refreshing soft drinks.

The parents and guardians of the graduates had a few comments to put across this is what they had to say...
“Am glad that my son Maxwell has realized what he wants to do in his life as he had no idea of what to do after high school. For such a short time he has been transformed.

Kennedy older sister had this to say “Am happy and proud of my brother because I have seen the work of Nairobits reflected in him and i hope that they will continue to mould young men for a better cause as this one”

Parent's meeting!!!

24th, Jan, 2009 was a wonderful day for the NairoBits fraternity, as the students' parents and the NairoBits staff got to interact in a parent’s meeting. The parent’s meeting was called upon to address issues that were of importance to the student’s successful progress. Likewise the meeting offered an open forum that enabled the parents to ask questions and hence gain clarity on a number of issues.

We got a chance to talk to some of the parents; Fred Owino`s parent had this to say “Am happy to be here, I thank God for NairoBits because it has really given my son a chance to learn computer. I believe the knowledge he will acquire from here will really help him in future.NairoBits has given our children something to do instead of being idle.”

Allan Kisali’s parent said “I thank NairoBits and Yess organization for giving my son an opportunity to learn web design. May God bless everyone who has played part in ensuring our children gain knowledge.” She also advised the students to be disciplined and obedient.

The meeting came to an end around midday and the parents got a chance to see their children’s work after having their soft drinks .It was quite rewarding seeing the parent’s commitment to their children’s welfare this clearly shown through their attendance.

Kudos parents keep up the spirit and for the students make your parents proud!

Yes we can!!! Obama's inauguration!

20th, January, 2009. Is a day that has gone into the books of historyOn this D- day Barrack Hussein Obama was inaugurated as the 44th president of the United States of America and the first African-American ever to rise to such heights.The whole world was anxiously waiting to watch and listen to Barrack’s speech. What an inspiration!!!!

Nairobits staff and students were not left out thanks to Google Company invitation. Nairobi University was the place it all went down. Watching The President’s speech on a big screen and thereafter pomp and celebration with the use of fascinating fireworks to entertainment from our local musicians. it was definitely a force to reckon with.

We really need leaders who can talk and inspire like president Barrack.

Its now official that 2009 is here with us, a new year with expectations and challenges.Nairobits on the other hand has continued to positively impact the lives of many youths in Kenya, through its programs in ICT. On 13th january the first group of 30 students started the 1st phase in the ICT course.Some of the students shared their expectations with us, read on;

This is the question that goes through the minds of trainers,former medialab, and the current medialab, and to answer this questions they are willing to dedicate most of their time to learn new ideas because to one person the world is desolate , dull and empty; to another the same world looks rich, interesting and full of meaning. “Eyes that look are common while eyes that see are rare,and how we position ourselves to receive makes all the difference and its why Media lab students have agreed to take web design lessons to a different path by making a website per group every fortnight.

Merry Christmas from NairoBits

This has been an extra ordinary year for every Kenyan owing to the post election skirmishes. Nevertheless, Nairobits staff has worked very hard and survived the turmoil especially at the beginning of the year. As I reflect back to many things that have happened, I lack many words to express my joy for we have seen light at the end of the tunnel. The year is ending at a high note and we are proud of our achievements this far. I would like to thank our founders, partner companies, donors, students and Nairobits staff for their tireless efforts to make this year a success.

Christmas is nearly upon us again, and brings to an end another extremely busy year. Nairobits has achieved an enormous amount over the last year. The post election violence at the start of this year, understandably, dominated the agenda but we should not forget the crucial role that Nairobits plays in empowering youths with ICT and life skills, giving them a tool to express themselves, and not forgetting behavior change. It is easy to forget this as we become immersed in the detail of everyday business, but Christmas is an appropriate moment to reflect on the vital role that you all are playing. I would like to thank you, and your families, for your commitment and professionalism throughout the year.

Finally the curtains close for this year activities with a wonderful graduation witnessed yesterday. Parents, friends and former student’s were all present at this wonderful day which people were waiting for. Course three student’s showcased their cultural projects and their T-shirts design which had powerful messages like “Unaringa je umepimwa?” by Kinyajui meaning you are boasting have you been checked? This is a strong message which encourages people to go for HIV test and know their status. If you think the ‘Obama mania’ ended you are mistaken there was a T-shirt design by Naomi which bared the portrait of US president elect Barack Obama with the message “Yes we did it”. The medialabers were also not left behind with their excellent websites designed for different companies and the best of all their personal portfolios which outlined their life, hobbies, education etc. Below are pictures and website screen shot of students work.

My big brother is here again TIME can you imagine the year is coming to an end and can you ask yourself what you have achieved and if there were obstacles on the way either social, political, economical or personal it doesn’t mean it’s the end of the road my big brother will be here again and he will be called 2009. Any plans for him? Think about it.

It has been one month since we had unstable Internet connection which has made communication very difficult and yet compromising my brother TIME. To our loyal readers I will take this opportunity to thank everyone for the support they have given us all through the year. I know it’s a short notice but we have come to the end of our yearly calendar which will see tomorrow a group of 50 students graduating. Youth Meet For Discussions

For the past 2 days Nairobits has been hosting a number of young people through an initiative by the Shareframe network with the main purpose of designing programs for them in and out of schools in various projected areas.

In this regard , they were collecting information from the young people whom they expect the project will reach ; by giving them an opportunity to voice their thoughts and concerns on issues affecting them and how much concerns can be addressed to help young people grow , and develop to be good and valuable citizens of this country.

The information will go a long way in helping the organisation as a whole to come up with policies that are valid and those that meet most of the expectations of the young people.

Chrisc and Hotgun Bible School tournament

The long awaited tournament that was scheduled to take place on 8th November 2008 at Githogoro field off kiambu road started on a very high note.With the weather so chilly and rainy,it was clear that the day was going to be very interesting.We all took a bus and alighted at Kigwa Stage.

The adventure of the day started off here.The roads were almost impassable and you can bet that it was quite a challenge to get to the field.It was a memorable moment for most of us to make our way through,and yes ,some were forced to walk bare feet.

The tournament was aimed at bringing youth together to participate in sports while sharing christian values and kicking Aids out .Youth were to participate in a variety of games that included football,volleyball and table tennis.Therefore on arrival,the Nairobits members started preparing themselves for the games which were to start in a short while. We had two football teams,Nairobits A & B and one volleyball team.Team A were first on the road and they were playing against .The fields were so much of a challenge as they were very slippery and muddy ; but this was not a liability to the team.With so much energy and psyched up fun's ,they managed to win the first match with 3 goals to nil.

Having qualified for the next level,they played against their second and third team and managed to score 2-1 and 1-0 respectively.This secured them a place at the quarter finals ; giving them more hopes of winning the semis and finals with the ultimatum of going home as the winners of the day!

Meanwhile ,team B were on the fields battling their first team.Theirs was a different story because after the game the match ended at 0-0.So, they had to go on battling it out for some goals .However we can say that fate had it that they were to go on like this , because after two more matches they managed to still maintain their status.

As more pressure was piling up ,team A went for their quarter finals.They were more determined than ever to win the match and this was evident from the complete passes and attempts to score a goal from the players.
However after a while the opposing team scored their first goal of the match.Several substitutes were brought in and after the game was over,the opposers had won the quarters with 1-0.

The volleyball team went to battle it out with their first team and they won the first set.However they did not manage to beat the second team which won both sets.Despite this ,they were happy that they enjoyed themselves and gave their best in the game.

After this game members gathered together to have their lunch, while talking over how the games were.

It was clear that all were happy with their performances and they looked forward for the next tournament next year.And this time round,they will take the trophies home!!! It was time to go home and in the same spirit of team work, we walked to the stage to take matatu's home.It was a great day for everyone who came.Not only because of the tournament but also because of the great experiences we shared together.

Well,the day could not end without some great moments which are captured below.So the next time you miss out on such an event , think twice!!

The Art of Color in Web-design

Friday,31st October was a wonderful day for all at NairoBits as we got a visit from one of Kenya’s prominent artists, Patrick Mukabi, better known as ‘Panye’.

He works as a painter, i.e. those that paint on canvas, with a group of artists known as Kuona Trust. His works are versatile, he says that he gets inspiration from the human race and the way that light falls on them. From his pieces, this is clearly depicted.

He was here to talk to us about how much, we web designers share a lot with the other visual artists; and in a specific way , he concentrated on the aspect of color and space.

He used things around us to explain his points to the core. No doubt everyone got out of the talk with something new. Personally( though this wasn’t part of the topic) I was truly perplexed to learn that when one wakes up after 7am in the morning, possibilities of making it in life are low.

Later on the media labers had a visit from an ex-student, Lorna Yvette Njeri. She talked to them on the matters they really needed to hear, internship and employment, in a more general way let me call it the real world for a web designer.

She has been through a lot in the outside world, and she was so kind to share each and every story from out there.

This got others scared and others more determined. On behalf of the media labers I extend my thanks to Lorna and on behalf of the whole NairoBits family, thanks Panye.

Laser Technology

Friday 25th October 2008 afternoon was a very good day for media lab students, they took a break from their normal classes and in its place, Mr. Jones from Laser Technology Ltd. paid them a visit. He introduced a Laser Machine for branding all kind of products and materials. Generally, the machine makes any kind of design on any kind of material you put into it. Be it wood, glass, leather, rubber and fabrics. After designing on Corel Draw, Photoshop or Illustrator, you run the design through the laser and it brings out your design in your preferred material. Laser Technology was invented in the U.S.A. in 1980’s, but was introduced in the Kenyan market in the 2003. It uses light concentrated from a lens on one place; that makes it more powerful to cut even the thickest metal around.

Some of the materials designed were passed around for us to sample, glass gifts, key holders, business card holders, branded trophies and many more. In fact, some of the students had custom made key holders designed for them.

Chrisc and Hotgun Bible School Tournament

In the spirit of promoting sustainable youth for sports,CHRISC and HOTGUN BIBLE SCHOOL have arranged an annual tournament which aims to bring youth together to participate in sports while sharing christian values and kicking Aids out games.The event is scheduled to take place on 8th November 2008 at Githogoro field off kiambu road staring from 0830hrs.

Time and Colour are they your friends?

In our day to day undertaking there are two things which are very important in whatever we do and that is time and color. Let me start by explaining why I consider time to be important then there after we will look at colors. Time can cost someone to miss a flight, a weeding, a meeting, a class etc. If not properly managed things might fall apart and as the old saying that says time wasted can never be recovered! I am happy that we have been able to work us a team and kept things on track with the courses now in progress that is course three and the medialab who at these moments are concentrating more on creative and technical skills. Ok, do you know why color is important in our daily life? Let me try to explain in brief, since the time of Jesus color as been all round and as been used in many ways for example for expression, attraction, therapy, communication etc. I came to understand more about colors when I tried to imagine color in association with something. Let us look at food versus color what is you favorite food? Mine is ugali and usually it’s served as ‘white’ in color and this give me appetite to eat more and more I could imagine if is green in color for sure I will not eat it. This is just a few of the many examples.

Course three students have been learning about color theory, color vs. culture, color vs. personality etc in preparation to the next classes which focus more on the technical knowledge using Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Flash to make website.

Yesterday image lesson was one of my greatest lessons with the students. Without contention images speak louder than words. The most interesting part in this lesson was the mood board whereby we had a character by the Name Jessica and we gave her attributes like she loves fashion, she is 20years, she like sports, she is educated, ambitious, she likes partying etc. We had the six groups and each group was to make presentation (collage) of Jessica’s attribute. And here is what the student comes up with….. Let the presentation speaks for themselves…

Tuesday,15th of September marked the day when all the course one graduates met to conference.This is after almost two months of training both course1 groups.
The main agenda of the day was to motivate,advice and above all convey to them their verdict on whether they are in or not, and if so, the steps forward for the same.

After the graduation of all the course 1's , a selection process is usually undertaken.Out of a large numbered group of 60 students,the trainers are supposed to come up with a list of 30 students who are going to proceed to the next course ; course2. Here ,they learn how to work with the internet intensively and more on basic concepts of the net.

It was also a great bonding session for the students , who took the opportunity to share their experiences with their colleagues.They had a good stay in Nairobits for the two months and did their best.By the end of the day,everyone went home knowing their fate.Despite the different responses they got, we wish them all the best in their endeavors.
The Nairobits family is looking forward to the course 2 class and believe that they will enjoy their stay while here!!

COURSE 1 GROUP 2 D.O.T GRADUATION

After intense entrepreneurship classes, it was a moment for the Digital Opportunity Trust students to showcase their business ideas. Each graduate had to come with an applicable business idea, explain his/her idea to the public and make a business plan and a budget for the same. All these skills were gained during the classes courtesy of the Digital Opportunity Trust (D.O.T).

It was a thrilling experience to see how the graduates came up with nice, diverse and easy to implement business ideas. Since some of them already had businesses that are running; their presentations were based on improving and enlarging their businesses.

Great ideas were exchanged and after the presentations, it was time for the visitors and the graduates to share some drinks. The graduates took this moment to wish each other good times ahead and to bid farewell for those who were not going to meet soon.
The day was a success to all.

THE D-DAY!!!

The day was graced with an amazing weather, not cold not hot, just right for such a day.
Like any other graduation there were rehearsals but this ones were different because there were rehearsals for the performances for the day,one could notice the small groups of medialabers mixed with course 1's practicing for different items.But that was after the course 1's had rehearsed for their presentations.
The day was here and people were early.the course1's ,or rather the form one's as they called themselves,with tension all over their faces ,the staff,with the help of medialabers ,running up and down to ensure all was in place and the guests streaming in place and the guests streaming in.
As the people were punctual the event started early,or rather on time.It started with prayers from one of the students then followed welcoming by the M.C ;and after a piece by "the band ".The song was about troubles especially us the less fortunate undergo back in our localities but God sees us through.What amazing music for sure Nairobits has talent.
Then the presentations begun one after the other,each so amazingly unique from the other.Like the other prior presentations ,the theme was to create an imaginary music shop and market it through the posters and C.D covers they made,not forgetting the business cards they made for themselves as the founders /managers of their music shops.
Music genres ranged fro benga,Lingala,jazz,soul,hiphop,reggae and raggah.The presentations were amazing.Below are a few of the posters and music C.D covers;

After a few presentations another group was given the chance to entertain the guests present with a play about what goes on in families. There was another performance in between the presentations, a poem ‘The Woman of Africa’.
After the presentations roseirene,the training coordinator gave a short speech and appreciated them for their nice work of taking the graduates through the course.ther were followed by a performance from one of the course 1's who closed the day in style,but of course the event wouldn't end without prayers which were led by one of the parents .After the vents everyone gathered for some snacks and drinks together before the Nairobits family went for lunch at the Bazaar and later for a picnic at Mamba village and the fun begun a fresh.
It took a while to get the means to the venue but we finally got there.We started with a few games and after a while got to the gift session. We usually buy gifts which are collected together and labelled with numbers.The gifts are then given to individuals with rregard to the numbers they correspond with.It gets interesting when the gifts are unwrapped and you have to show everyone what you got.gifts range from toothbrushes,shaving razors, cups dolls and all.It is such a sight to behold.
We were then divided to two groups to go and play more games;which were quite interesting.It started to get dark and we went to have some snacks before dancing to tunes.We were then good to go.
On the way to the bus stop one would tell the tension build up as the course 1's had began thinking of whether or not they will make it.If you missed this,you missed out.

GRADUATION IS HERE

After one month of enjoyable and intense training,the course one group two will finally be graduating on Friday 12th September 2008.They are expected to have designed their posters, business card, have corporate colors for their shop and come up with slogans and Names of the same .

Apart from e-learning ,they have also undergone entrepreneurial classes facilitated by DOT (Digital Opportunity Trust) and life skills facilitated by IYF (International Youth Foundation) ; taking place on Monday and Friday respectively.

From their testimonials it is clear that being in Nairobits has been one of the most interesting and eye opening experiences they have ever had. Hospitality and the spirit of team work was an inevitable factor that amazed them all.

These are some of the remarks that were given by the students who are going to graduate on Friday.They are so much fascinated on how much they have learnt and what they can do with computers.Most of them insisting on the fact that they can now make posters that they once saw on the roadside.

As much as they found this period of time to be very short , They are quite anxious of going to the next course as most of them found their stay in Nairobits as a very interactive, educative and thrilling experience.

GRADUATION

Here is a glimpse of what took place on 15th August 2008 for the course 1 group 1 graduation. The morning of the graduation day started off on a high note,with graduates arriving early,smartly dressed ,and on their faces, excitement! The ceremony started at about 10.00 a.m.

The M.C, Victor Omondi began by welcoming everyone to the event and recognized the presence of the parents and visitors. To warm up the guests, there were entertainments and the presentations begun.The theme of the event was "My Music Shop". They were to come up with an imaginary music shop, make a poster for an event hosted by the music shop and C.D. covers (back and front) for the same.

Presentations varied from Hip-hop, Salsa, Reggae, Raggah, Benga, Afro-fusion, Mugithi, Blues, Bongo, R'n'b, Rock and you can bet they came with great presentations!Other entertainments came in between the sessions ranging from plays, poems and songs. Indeed they had done great presentations and they would not go unrewarded therefore everyone received a certificate.

Afterwards, we proceeded for a delicious lunch at "The Bazaar" then to the "Mamba Village" for a picnic and team building activities. We divided ourselves into two teams "the Mean machines" and "the lighters". Part of the activities included games like "truth or dare" , "the king wants" and "mime game", not to mention cheer songs and Nursery Rhymes.This was an event to behold and those who missed,Dare not do the same next time!!!

Welcome New Course1,Group2 !!!

Today 12th August, 2008, we welcomed Course 1 Group 2 students to Nairoits. Fresh from their homes and community organization, we can tell they are ready for anything that comes along their way.

After orientation, they are going to be assigned to their working area and each of them will have the privilege of having and using their own computer for 5 weeks. These are just some of the opportunities NairoBits offers and if “a lot is given, a lot is expected”. NairoBits we welcome the new family and look forward to working with them as they develop their careers in Computer Design.

Entrepreneurship Class Presentation

Monday 11th August, 2008 saw the completion of 4 weeks of Entrepreneurship classes for Course 1 group 1. This is a course within NairoBits in conjunction with DOT(Digital Opportunity Trust) to enable individuals acquire business skills; be able to market themselves and start imaginary businesses. They are also required to write a Business plan and present it before Nairobits fraternity.

Many business ideas were presented and it was fun, mind boggling and interactive to see people come up with new ideas to take their communities to a new level. Also, being the second last day for some of them and the second time to present before a large crowd, they had some tension but good confidence compared to the first time.

Graduation Rehearsals

Friday's 9th August afternoon from 2:00pm to 5:00pm, saw Course 1 group 1 rehearse their presentation for their posters and both sides of their CD covers; in the presence of their fellow classmates, course 4 (aka Media Labbers) and Trainers. Part of what they have to come up with by the end of Course1 is a poster of an imaginary music shop and a CD cover of the same. They are to present them on their graduation before their parents’, friends and Nairobits as a whole. Interesting pieces of work were displayed and it was obviously evident that they had given their all in this task.

After five weeks of training on various application and introduction to computer, time of reckoning came today: Tuesday 6^th August 2008, from 11.00am – 1.00pm, Course 1 had their test exams to test their imagination and creativity on the issue of avoiding crime. This will contribute to about 20% of the total marks needed to proceed to the next course.

After postponing the graduation date from Friday, August 8^th 2008 to 15^th of the same. The event will start at 9.00am at NairoBits and proceed to Mamba Village for lunch and team building activities. The plan is to make it as fun as possible for course 1 team and the entire fraternity of NairoBits. It was fun having all the group 1 class around, and we are looking forward to having them back for Course 2 and 3 in about five or six weeks.

As you might know we started again our cycle of training new students after a successful graduation of the course 3 and the medialab. The first e-course of the NairoBits e-Learning Center trains in basic computer skills combined with business presentation design. Behind the screens consists of 14 lessons in which students learn the absolute basics of the computer and get introduced to most common applications of the pc. On the other hand on Monday's we do have business enterprise class conducted by the Dot Kenya here at NairoBits, students get to learn what it take to start a business. Friday's we have the IYF ( International Youth Foundation) curriculum conducted by the NairoBits training team. The course also teaches lessons on how to work in a professional company, self esteem etc.

The most interesting part in course 1 ( Behind the screen) is the concept of starting a business with a virtual music shop set up in mind. Students have to think of material that they will use to advertise and promote their shops. In this case everyone is supposed to design posters, business card, choose corparate colour for their shop, come up with slogans and Names of their music shop. I intiverview Mary and Ramathan on how they are progressing with the assignments and the lesson covered so far. here is what they had to say;

"Music helps us to recuperate, it soothes, relaxes and educates".

"The poster that I have done is about a salsa night courtesy of Salsa Sounds. I love the whole idea about salsa music it just has a way of putting you on your feet, you cannot separate salsa music with the dance itself they go hand in hand making it even more interesting. It’s simply thrilling and entertaining. The reason why it’s at night is for the effect of the lighting, which tends to reflect and hence adds vibrancy to the whole event".

"The slogan is “thrilling music, just for you” meaning salsa is breathtaking and I am recommending it to guys to have a taste of it".

"The logo compiles of the music shop initials, a half CD joined with a couple dancing salsa, meaning that salsa music normally goes hand in hand with salsa dance to give a complete exciting experience. Use of the initials is to personalize the logo".

"The colors in the poster are red, fiery orange, purple, black and yellow. Red to symbolize excitement and love, fiery orange to symbolize warmth and vibrancy, purple to insinuate a ceremony. Black to symbolize elegance and yellow to insinuate joy and happiness".

"Well my poster talk of peace concert as tool of harmonizing people and encourage peace and also opportunity to launch and promote my music shop."

Describe your logo? My logo is simple because I only used abbreviation of my music shop

How about your slogan?

"Short, clear and precise (Sing 2 live)"

"It is basically musical. I mean the whole concept".

How are the classes so far?
"It's very exciting, interesting and entertaining. The trainers are very supportive and committed nevertheless encourages us to use resources wisely and effectively".

Music is life, Music Motivates, Music soothes..... and so on. Imagine a world without music?( real, good content I don't know how I can quantify this....!!). Music concept is used within the course 1 as the main theme because most youth like particular music for various reason either RNB, reggae, Hip hop etc. NairoBits combines music as a theme and the computer as a tool to express our creativity, for production and also to learn important computer packages. Next week Friday we have the graduation for the 1st group of course 1 so watch the space.

Media Labers meet Course Ones

After being in the Media Lab for 2days, Media Labers finally had a chance to formally meet the new comers aka Course 1’s. It was funny because they have been here for a week before the final selection for the Media Lab was done.

After participating in a discussion about “who is smarter, human being or the computer” where human being finally emerged the winners, RoseIrene gave the go ahead for the Media Labers to first introduce themselves. In their abnormal, noisy and funny way, each of them mentioned their name, the organization they came from, the estate or ‘mtaa’ (community). It was a time to behold as Khalif, on his shades could not sit down, Sisa was restless and uneasy and as you would expect Esther and Freshia were calm. Everyone tried his/her best to come up with a wise saying or words to encourage the course 1’s, which they took and accepted with open arms.

When their time came, humbly, rather shyly, others trembling as they are not used to talking before a big crowd of 50 people: they introduced themselves following the protocol laid.

The whole experience was generally interactive, unlike what we expected, the Course 1’s were more open and outgoing considering the fact that they have been around for only a week.

What more can we say, we are looking forward to a more exciting NairoBits community for the next 2 weeks!!

Medialab class in session - Lets discuss!

From the day of Interview to joining classes

It's another day as NairoBits is finally having a new intake of new students who are starting classes tomorrow with the tag name "Behind the Screen".Behind the Screen is a one month course focusing on the basic skills of computer usage and internet. During the interviews with the new student Fatuma Roba saw their anxiety ,dreams, expectations and open minded within the students. Evelyne Ajeso one of the new student from mathare root organization had this to say

Fatuma Roba: "how did you know NairoBits?"

Evelyne Ajeso: "I knew Nairobits through my organization Mathare root in which I was told that NairoBits is offering a free scholarship to slum dwellers on web design and development skills so we were randomly selected and I was among my fellow youth members."

Fatuma Roba: "How was your interview?"

Evelyne Ajeso: "The interview was cool as it was measuring my language, personality and integrity".

Evelyne Ajeso was among the students who were selected to start the first 30 of 6o students who will attend the course. Today Fatuma had a chance to interview/ interact with Evelyne Ajeso when she attend the first day of orientation. This is what she had to say...

Fatuma Roba:"Aren't you happy that you are now here?"

Evelyne Ajeso: "Wow! I lack words to explain to you how i felt when I was told that i will be joining NairoBits, the only thing I remember doing is running to my mum and explaining to her the good news to her as she did not knew at first that I had came for the interview".

Fatuma Roba: "Now that you have joined NairoBits what are some of your expectation,dreams and ambitions in life.?"

Evelyne Ajeso: "My biggest ambitions is to be able to finish all courses and become like one of our member, I mean the former students who went through NairoBits and succeeded in life."

Fatuma Roba: "Why NairoBits and not any other colleges?"

Evelyne Ajeso: "NairoBits is the only institution so far I know that caters and cares for us the slum dwellers who have the creativity but lack financial aid to improve our living standards."

The second interviewer was Antony who is from one stop organization and him also had this to share with Fatuma.

Fatuma Roba: "How did you came to know NairoBits."

Antony mwangi: "I knew it through my aunt who heard it from her friend who had a son in NairoBits, then after I had cleared my high school I was interested to come to this school and also learn what other people talk about outside there".

Fatuma Roba: "Now lets talk about the interview how was it?

Antony Mwangi: "It was a special one to me as I have never been to any interview, it was my first and the most enjoyable interview I have ever dreamt of."

Fatuma Roba: "It seems as if you enjoyed it, tell me more"

Antony Mwangi: "Yes please with every bits of it as I was interviewed by the trainers and I liked the way they handled the questions and my answers, it was fun but i was scared at some point as I went home that day, I felt as if I had not answered some question correctly I guess it's because of a lot anxiety and butterfly I had at that moment."

Fatuma Roba: "Aren't you happy that you've now join the school?"

Antony Mwangi: "Men! don't even mentioned it I'm the happiest person on earth and the luckiest of all men as finally I'm now going to do something useful in my life as I love doing graffiti and since it will go hand in hand with the design skill that I will get from NairoBits I can't wait for my classes to begin tomorrow".

Fatuma Roba: "You've mentioned graffiti in our conversations what did you want to be after your high school?"

Antony Mwangi: "My dream was to become a graphic designer and an accountant since I was a young kid so I will eventually make my dream come true, since NairoBits will not only offer design skills but also the the enterprise skills."

Fatuma Roba: "What are some of your dreams and expectation in life?"

Antony Mwangi: "It was superb as at first all the staff introduced themselves then we all had to do the same and knowing one another was fun. the most enjoyable part of all was when one of the trainer (Tosh) take a short tour with us through NairoBits and its environment and the rule and regulation was very clear to every one of us."

Fatuma Roba: "Talking of environment do you think it's conducive for learning?"

Antony Mwangi: "Of course yes it's the coolest place anyone on earth will love to come and learn, from staff to classes and stationaries found around is very good and very professional".

Fatuma Roba: "Anything you want to tell the youth who are out there?"

Antony Mwangi: I would like them to know that no man is an island just go out there and find yourself an organization to volunteer in you never know it can cost you a better living and find opportunities that are around us and exploit it".

Aside from course one orientation there is also a group of technicians who are doing some cleanups of the computers in order to make them ready for tomorrows classes of course one who have joined the new environment of mouse handling and computer maintainers and learning some basics computer skills for the next one month.

The Grand Graduation

Hello to all of you readers. If you missed this, you missed out. It was one of the best Graduations NairoBits has ever had. The cameras, the clad (wear), the graduates, the presentations, the entertainment, the refreshments and finally, the fun of being together and seeing people you haven’t seen in quite a while.

It all begun a few months ago when the now graduates started preparing for there projects to the execution of the projects, to there rehearsals a day before the actual graduation.

The rehearsals were tense, ‘will the site work or not?’ was the question on many of them at the rehearsals and since they had done them to there level best none of them had any glitch and they were ready for show-casing at the graduation.

The day came (3rd July 2008) and the graduates came accompanied by parents, relatives and friends. The event begun at around 10:30 am and the hall was full to overflowing. With a prayer from a graduate then followed a welcome speech from the management by Roseirene after which there was some entertainment from a number of the graduates. There was a song, narration and a poem performed to the audience who where eagerly waiting.

The staff was then introduced to the audience after which the presentations begun. The course 3 went first with there cultural projects presentations. These groups comprised of five students in each group thus the groups were six. After each group presentation, each individual in the group was given a chance to introduce themselves, mention their role in the making of the site then they would show t-shirts they had personally designed and explain the thinking behind the design on the t-shirt. The graduates were then awarded with a certificate of merit.

The first group was doing a project on the communication culture and the site name was ‘Africom’ they got the name from African Communication. Second was a project on footwear well known by Kenyan’s as ‘akala’ and the site name was ‘Akalture’ they got the name from Akala Culture. Third was the group dealing with the tradition healers and the site name was, ‘Forgotten Healers’. To them the traditional healers have been forgotten by the people yet they still do the same healing they did to our fore fathers, which is why they called the site the forgotten healers. Next was the sheng’ culture and the site name was ‘Sheng’ Dictionary’ for sure this explains itself it’s all about the sheng’ language. The next group was doing a site about African music and the site name was ‘

Kenya

rhythm’ and they were dealing with traditional Kenyan music and how it’s being preserved. The last but not the least presentation of the course 3 was on pots, the site name was ‘Agulu’. The site name is actually the name of a pot in the Luo community. After this there was a short break before the start of the media-lab presentations.

During the break there were a number of things one couldn’t avoid seeing. One of them was the surprise on the guests faces they couldn’t believe that such people could achieve such sites within such a short time.

The other thing that one had to notice was the clad (wear) style. The people were dressed for the occasion, ‘dressed to kill’. The ladies with their nicely made dresses and the gentlemen in designer wear.

After the break there was a skit by the graduates and its theme was something to do with the well known disease, the killer disease, HIV/AIDS. Quite educative and entertaining!

Then next the media-labers began their presentations. They each had two projects to present; their personal portfolios and one corporate website. This got the audience even more amazed especially their personal portfolios that were full flash animated sites, with music and amazing features. During this all the ears and eyes were stuck on the presentation. Some of the children who had attended couldn’t help but envy the graduates and wish to be like them one day, their dreams all of a sudden took another route, the design route.

It was during these presentations that we all realized how big the NairoBits family was and it’s joy to have grown a child bigger, one of the graduates had just had a beautiful baby girl and not only was her mother happy and proud of having her that day off success but so was the NairoBits family led by Anne one of our ‘mothers’.

After each presentation, like the course 3 presentations, the graduates were awarded with a certificate of the merit of these amazing skills. After the presentations there was a dance by siblings of one of the graduates, that was one of the best entertainments of the day.

Anne then stood to give a vote of thanks and the first thing was to congratulate the graduates and give them some motherly advise, then she thanked the visitors for there time, patience and support to the students.

The graduation was then officially ended with a word of prayer from one of the graduates’ parents. To crown the day there were some refreshments prepared by the Nairobits family. It was good to accompany the refreshment with stories and congratulations from all over and everyone.

MYSA STAFF SQUAD Vs NAIROBITS STUDENT/STAFF

Friday 27^th June 2008 from 2:00pm – 6:00pm

Venue: Mathare United Sports Ground

The journey to MYSA Headquarters started some minutes form 2.00 pm and every student was up-beat and ready to participate either in cheering or playing. The walk to the bus stop was very interesting, with students and staff interacting and sharing of how they have been preparing for the match.

It was fine seeing how even the ladies were exited about the game and some of them were actually going to be part of the team. Excitement was written all over our faces as we boarded the big classy, matatu (bus) with booming music and an LCD screen to accompany it, to the venue of the match.

As the players were changing into their sports gear, the cheering squad mainly comprising of ladies were giving their all, they even attempted the “Mexican wave”!

All the teams had more than enough players needed for the 1^st 11 and so, we agreed to make two teams, team A and B. This was facilitated by Geoffrey Orayo aka “Rai” and we had to start on a strong note thus, team A & B.

The game started on a very high note and in 6 minutes time, the home team was up by a goal. Down but not out, the visitors pressed on and barely 30 minutes into the 1^st half, the home team were two notches higher. Visitors gave their all and with several attempts on goal, they all seemed to be blank shots as the MYSA goalie did everything to deny us a goal.

The second half was equally impressive, as this saw team B from the visitors lock horns with the seemingly impressive MYSA Staff squad. The first 10 minutes saw more shots on goal and more complete passes from the visitors. Team B impressed the spectators and chances of scoring a goal looked promising. Aido had several shots on target and just when it seemed a goal was coming, Jose from NairoBits gave the worst back shot of the year and the best goal of the game. In just about five minute’s time, we conceded our fourth goal but never lost hope. Several substitutes were bought in the second half but a goal seemed lacking and the referee blew the whistle to end the match 4-0 in favor of MYSA Staff Squad.

Though the match ended this way, the visitors were in their usual up-beat mood because they had nothing to loose, since they come to the match with an open mind and thus enjoyed themselves to the fullest.

After some refreshments and a vote of thanks to the hosts for their hospitality, it was time to go home. MYSA even offered us a lift to Outering road, ‘Rounder’ and finally all Shops; it was a day to remember. Talk about a Friday well spent, then this would definitely have to be one of them!!

On the 3^rd July 2008 we will be honoured to graduate the course 3 and the current media lab students and mid July we will hasher in a new media lab class and the start of course 1 .Quite interesting to see it happening again from what is a computer to great web designers and developers. The graduation will take place at the Go down Art centre, the grandaunt's will show case their work from corporate websites for multiple clients, neighbourhood ( what goes around the neighbourhoods) and cultural website. Remember culture is the way of life and doesn't mean the past alone even the present. Article by Wilson Masaka

CREATIVE EXHIBITION

Around Nairobits a lot of things happen. At the GoDown Arts Centre, young children came to explore their talent in art. Seven days was enough to do wonders. It only needed the basics. Their activities included :-

Charcoal drawing- Drawing landscapes using charcoal.
2 color painting- Using 2 colors of paint to bring out the mood in the piece of art.
Mosaic using beads.
Free painting- Looking for a theme of ones choice and painting.
Print making- Making prints using simple things like potatoes, glass and hands.
Bead work- Making ornaments e.g necklaces, bangles, earings, etc using beads.

My name is Gideon Kyallo, currently am a student (media lab) at Nairobits School of digital design where am specializing on web design and development and opening space to anything useful in life that can help me grow positively. I believe that true creativity is the key to success.

I love writing poems, drawing, creative writing and composing songs/music. For the outdoor games, I love basketball, soccer, table tennis (ping pong), pool table and swimming.

My interpersonal skills: hard working, communal, team player, creative, candid, supportive.

My names are Nyamboki Faith .I work best in situations that make me think critically and creatively. I am currently at Nairobits, a design school, in Nairobi, and I love everything about it. Nairobits School of Digital Design is found within the vicinity of Nairobi, Kenya.Its located at south B area along Dunga Rd. It caters for informal settlements youth in Nairobi who have the creativity but lack financial support in making their dream come true in the world of technology.

As a school we train this youth who have great ideas and skill through our schedule classeswhich consist of a four level course.

Course one-introduction to basic computer skills which runs for one month.

Course two-interactivity within the internet.

Course three-basic design and programming skills,combined with course two takes three months.

Final Course/media lab-real world of design and programming whereby students are exposed to the world of dealing with clients and the Course takea period of six months.
